Culture on a Stick

I’m sure every Brit will agree with me that New York epitomizes the idea of America. Growing up in Massachusetts, New York was just a hop, skip, and a jump away. Unfortunately, I moved out west long before I was 21, so I never got to really “experience” the city.  New York is exciting for any age group; it has a million things to see and do, including 23,000 restaurants to try. There’s the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. Then there’s Broadway, the opera, comedy shows, and art gallery openings…but there are a couple reasons to go to New York that you might not have thought of, and they are on the streets!
Have you really experienced the myriad of street performers?  Did you know that the street performers are hand-selected by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority by audition, and it’s been going on for 25 years this way? What this means to a traveler like you or I is that going there means watching some of the best street performers in the country. The diversity of talent itself is a sight to behold. From tricks to music, there is never a dull moment on the streets of New York.

And let’s not forget the food street vendors.  Did you know that you can actually buy field guides to the mobile eateries? While the vegetarian in me recoils at the thought of a New York hot dog, I am sure many reader’s lips are smacking at the very notion of a steaming dog with mustard, sauerkraut, and that NY-style tomato relish. But there are tacos and Chinese food…plantains, grilled corn….you could stay in New York a year and never have to set foot into a restaurant!  A field guide can provide you with such thorough culinary coverage that you may find a need to move into your “chubby” pants by the end of your trip…

And if you’re worried that New York that some slick pocket-picker may bumping up against you in the hubbub, you might be surprised to know that the crime rate for the size of the city is, is actually low. The streets have been “cleaned up” a lot since I went there as a child.
Why not take on the streets of NYC this summer, or better yet, spend a hot 4th of July there? New York is what I like to call “culture on a stick” and I think I’ll buy my ticket right now! If you book a New York trip with Expedia.com before July 7th, you can enjoy hotels and flights are super low rates. And be sure to stop by WantACode.com first to see what other savings, deals, and steals Expedia has going on.
